Art 121: Observational Drawing
Professor: Michael Stillion
This course really helped me develop proportion, scale, value accuracy, and composition unity in my work.
The project below was reductive halloween special. These is my favorite type of drawings I enjoy using this method since I am most experienced as a illustrator. I am comfortable with extremely dark points and the perfect highlights. Thus getting a strong contrast is my forte. This project lasted about a month beginning in October. The only requirement was you had to at least observe one of the pumpkins.

Picture 2: Beginnings
In the beginning I used charcoal to draw the still life, then put charcoal powder over it to get a neutral tone. The tricky part is getting the lines dark enough so the powdered charcoal will not wipe it away.

Picture 3
In this photo I am creating line weight so shading and highlighting will be easier. My goal is to try to create movement and direction.

Picture 4
In this image I am adding shading to necessary areas.

Picture 5
Adding the final piece. The final image contains the darkest of the dark, and the lightest of the lights resulting in very deep contrasts, and gradient of grays.
