Art 111: Strip Studies

Professor: Larry Collins

I Started this class in the Spring semester and due to a scheduling issue i entered the class a couple weeks late. This resulted a limited selection of projects and as of the deadline this is the only big project that has been finalized thus far. That being said the
strip studies version 1, 2 and 3 ended up being something very different for me, I have never worked in 3D and I had to think a lot about what shifts and cuts to do in every phase. For my video portion and the 3D sculptures I used the "V cut" with a diagonal vertical shift.

Closer look
Phase 1: I spent a long time cutting and arranging the strips. I was happy with the outcome but could have been cleaner.. as I said this was a new experience for me and knives and glue etc are new mediums.. Hopefully I will improve.
Phase 2: Use of strip #1
The following video required the use of everyday things i have in my room to create texture and movement. I went with more of the shift than focusing on the cut, the movement brought some type of energy that I thought was very interesting to watch.
Music is by Post Malone, "White Iverson".
Phase 3: Used strip #1
I began by creating a diverse range of triangles and V cuts. Each sculpture or relief are required to have one part, or piece, grey and a lot of texture. I focused on the negative space and sizes that I would present, and the 360 view of each piece.
Sculpture 1:
I decided to create this sculpture with dominating grey tones and yet still have texture incorporated. As I was doing this, I wasnt happen with it and felt it was just dull and white. I then came up with an idea of the piece being a 360 walk around; so i added different values throughout and more triangles/V cuts. I also tried to focused on negative space.
Sculpture 2
Pretty simple design of stacking of straight linear lines to create V cuts in a different way. Contains texture that was made with my figures to give it that abstract look on all sides of the piece. This is where my experience with 3D and the tools showed. I felt this could be better.
Relief
The Relief design spins around a spiral metal piece piercing through the middle of all the pieces. I focused on trying to create balance equally throughout on both sides so it wouldn't feel plan on one side. I really liked how this one turned out.
